Bayonne , the city of France
Bayonne is a city and commune of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department located in south-western part of France. Bayonne and several other big and small towns compose an agglomeration with the population of about 180,000 people, 44,000 of which live in Bayonne itself. Bayonne is also the main city of the French part of the Basque Country. The city of Bayonne is situated on the conjunction of the two rivers Nive and Adour.
The history of Bayonne started in the 3rd century AD with the building of a Roman military site. In the 9th century the city was invaded by the Danish. They turned Bayonne into a trading port and an important sea trade hub from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Then it belonged to England and later to the French Empire. Now it is a part of France and a center of Basque nationalism and along with Biarritz and Anglet is a part of a BAB agglomeration area.
Bayonne is divided into two parts - Grand Bayonne and Petit Bayonne. The first one is a business and tourist center of the city and the latter is full of restaurants, bars, museums and historical sites. In addition to it Bayonne can offer tourists bull-fighting shows and several festivals such as Jazz festival and Bayonne ham.
